About

Founded in 1856 at the University of Alabama, Sigma Alpha Epsilon is one of the largest college fraternities in the world. With more than 300,000 initiated members and 224 chapters, ΣΑΕ provides its members with a vast network of opportunities. Brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon live by the creed of “The True Gentlemen”, in which they hold their conduct, honor, and virtue. ΣΑΕ can be represented by the Phoenix. Born of fire and ash, this is a symbol of eternal life, and at 155 years old, Sigma Alpha Epsilon is reflective in this.

Originally founded as Phi Tau Alpha in 1928 at GMI, this would eventually become ΣΑΕ’s current chapter at Kettering University. In the years following World War II, General Motors Institute experienced considerable growth in stature and size and as a result become a prime potential location for national fraternities. After careful consideration and a chapter vote, Phi Tau Alpha began contact with the national headquarters of ΣΑΕ in 1960 to inquire about the necessary steps in gaining affiliation. Then in 1965, the chapter was installed as an official chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

ΣΑΕ has been called home to many prominent figures in society as well. People such as William McKinley – 25th President of United States, Gary Cowger – VP of GM Global Manufacturing and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Kettering University, Troy Aikman – Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl MVP Quarterback, William Faulkner – Nobel Prize winning author, David Spade – actor/comedian, William Oefelein – NASA Astronaut, Dierks Bently – country singer, Nick Lachey – pop singer, just to name a few. Many of these famous men have accredited part their success to being a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The experiences and connections gained by being an ΣΑΕ are life changing.

Every fall, ΣΑΕ offers the Warren Poslusny Tuition Grant, worth $500. This scholarship is awarded to the most outstanding, B-Section incoming freshman male applicant, regardless of whether that person ever pledges ΣΑΕ or not (selection to be determined by Michigan Epsilon officers). The award check will be paid to the incoming freshman by the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Foundation (Evanston, IL) from the Michigan Epsilon Chapter Education Fund.

In the fall of 2010, the brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon moved into their brand new home at 1509 University Ave. Located just one and a half blocks north from campus, ΣΑΕ is the closest fraternity to Kettering University. Furnished with plenty of wide-screen TV’s, high-speed internet, 300+ TV channels, expansive library of books and online files, pool table, and brand new furniture and commercial-grade cooking appliances, there is always something going on at the chapter house. The current brothers of ΣΑΕ are very fortunate for this house and welcome everyone to come enjoy it with them.
